Mercer Arboretum & Botanic GardensMercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens Average User Rating: (0 votes, add your vote or comments) Mercer is named after the original owners, Thelma and Charles Mercer, who purchased 14.5 acres in the late 1940s and began building a masonry home, now the Volunteer Center, and a garden. The Mercers, avid horticulturists, had a dream of sharing their small private garden with the community and wanted to preserve their special oasis. Harris County purchased the property for use as an educational and horticultural facility for the public in 1974. Today, Mercer has over 250 acres of East Texas piney woods showcasing the region's largest collection of native and cultivated plants. Volunteers from the community played an early role in the care and further development of the gardens. Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens continues that tradition with an active volunteer program today. Do you know of a Place that should be included here?
